ODBBA are sad to announce the passing of one of our much respected Vice-Presidents, Cliff Edmunds. Those who knew Cliff will remember him as a superb tenor horn player being the solo horn for Morris Motors, Men O’Brass and Harry Mortimer’s All Star Band. When Cliff retired from playing he took up the baton and became resident conductor for Morris Motors and later Oxford Concert Brass. Cliff also adjudicated for many years where he judged all over the country. Our condolences go to Cliff’s family at this sad time.

ODBBA 3rd and 4th section bands had a good workout today during the annual ODBBA Test Piece Workshop. Nigel Seaman led a scratch band through Dan Price’s Darkwood, and Derek Broadbent through Alan Fernie’s St. Andrew’s Variations. Both gave the players and conductors very useful insights into the works, and ODBBA hopes that the partaking bands will be able to use this advice and convert it into contest success at the Winter Contest and the Areas.

Sadly, family commitments mean that Martin Taylor has had to stand down from the committee after very many years of dedicated service, including as Chair and Vice-Chair. We are delighted that he has agreed to become an Honorary Life Vice-President, so we know that he will be keeping in touch with us. Thank you Martin for all your hard work and support over the years.

At the ODBBA AGM this afternoon, we were delighted to appoint Ken Membury to be President of the Association. The previous incumbent, Barbara Sudworth, had decided to stand down due to ill health and time considerations. ODBBA would like to thank Barbara for her support over the years, and wish her well for the future.
ODBBA is delighted to welcome Ken into his new role, and feel this appointment is very well deserved – Ken has been involved with the Association for very many years, having been on the committee in various roles for some 40 years, and his father played in the first ODBBA contest in 1923.
We look forward to working with him for many years to come.

Towards the end of last year, ODBBA were delighted to present its President’s Award to Mark Sherratt of Yarnton Band. This award is given each year by President Barbara Sudworth in recognition of outstanding service to bands in our area. Mark is a very worth recipient, having been a member of Yarnton Band for many years; having trained generations of youngsters, and having almost single-handedly kept the band going through hard times in past years. Congratulations Mark!

On March 1st, ODBBA held its annual Winter Contest. With an entry of 20 bands all playing the area testpiece, and the lower sections also competing for a march prize, a great day of music making was had by all. Adjudicator Frank Renton complimented bands on the quality of their playing while giving some very useful hints that bands can use at the forthcoming Area Contests. ODBBA wishes all of the competing bands the best of luck at their respective Area Contest.

Following on from Jubilee Brass’s recent success in the London & Southern Counties Regional contest where the band were crowned champions of the 4th section, (winning an invitation to the National Finals of Great Britain contest in September), the band recently decided to try their luck against the best bands in the West of England. The band entered the West of England Bandsmen’s Festival held at Bugle, which has been running for over 100 years. Having travelled down to Cornwall on the Friday the band took part in the contest on Saturday 21st June. The day started with an adjudicated march through the streets of Bugle by all competing bands, with the local people & band supporters cheering & clapping as the bands made their way to the open air arena.
Jubilee Brass entered the 4th section and also the section above (3rd Section) competing against higher nationally-graded bands. At the end of a very enjoyable, hot & sunny day the results were given. Jubilee Brass received Third Prize in the 4th section and following a fantastic performance of the aptly named St. Austell suite the band were awarded First Prize in the 3rd section. The whole experience of an open-air competition and a very warm welcome by the West of England bands made a great weekend for Jubilee Brass.
This latest result continues the great success the band has already achieved this year having won their section at the Oxford & District Brass Band Association contest in February, followed by the London & Southern Counties Regional contest in March. The band now looks forward to representing the London & Southern bands and the Oxfordshire bands at Cheltenham in the National Brass Band Finals of Great Britain in September.

On 23rd Februrary, ODBBA held the Winter Contest at Marlborough School, Woodstock. An own-choice march and testpiece competition, this gave the 11 competing bands a chance to perform the area testpiece a few weeks before the big day. Adjudicator John Winterflood commented on the high standard of playing throughout the day, and wished the bands well at their respective area contests. Click here for a full set of results.

Last Sunday saw ODBBA hold the Annual General Meeting. Despite a low turnout from bands, the meeting was productive and saw the adoption of a new Constitution. We would like to pass our thanks to Tony Redshaw and Nigel Hall, (who both stood down from the Committee), for all their hard work over the years, and welcome new members Rob Tompkins and Rebecca Lake.
15 November 2013
ODBBA were deeply saddened to learn of the recent death of Ian Clamp. Ian had been General Secretary of ODBBA for many years, and had spent his whole life involved in banding in the Oxford area, most recently as conductor of Marsh Gibbon Band. We pass our condolences to his family.

12 November 2012
ODBBA Massed Band Concert was given on Sunday 28th October at the Tingewick Hall, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, to an audience of band enthusiasts and supporters of the Oxford Heartfelt Appeal Fund. Players from the local bands of Abbey Brass, Bletchingdon, City of Oxford, Jubilee Brass, Kidlington, Kennington, Wantage, Witney, Yarnton and the Accidentals Brass Group, were conducted by Ken Membury and Clifford Sadler, and the evening compered by Doug Brand.
The horn solo, Demelza was expertly played by Danielle Sadler of Jubilee Brass, and the humorous euphonium duet, Another Fine Mess featured Alan Jones of Abbey Brass and David Clack of Jubilee Brass dressed as characters from Laurel and Hardy which brought amusement to the evening. Guest vocalist Morag Crowther after singing Pie Jesu, Make me a Channel of your Peace and selections from My Fair Lady invited the audience to join her in Proms favourites Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory.
Guest Speaker of the evening was Sir Christopher Ball who leads the Appeals campaign. After explaining his efforts to play a brass instrument in his youth he described the critical process in the assessment of heart conditions and how necessary it is to update facilities in a new Echocardiography Unit and purchase state-of-the-art machines giving higher 3-D images of the heart. The evening concluded with a retiring collection and the total raised during the event amounted to £1,101 which was presented to the Appeals fundraising team on Thursday 8th November by the newly appointed Chairperson of the ODBBA Mrs. N. Jones, Compere Doug Brand and Concert Organiser Ken Membury.
Thanks to all who helped in any way.
4 November 2012

ODBBA thanks Tony for all his hard work as Chairman over the last few years.

Congratulations to all the players, young and perhaps not quite so young, who took part in the ODBBA Brass Festival today at Sandhills School. It was a fabulous day of music-making, and all competitors can be justly proud of their performances. Full results are available from the Download Centre.
18 March 2012

On Sunday, ODBBA hosted Brett Baker (principal trombone of Black Dyke Band) in a workshop day. The day was a huge success, with over 30 people taking part. Everybody agreed how enjoyable the day had been, and how much they had learned. Thanks are due to Brett Baker who was truly inspiring, and to David Taylor who accompanied him on the piano! Photos of the day are available for download from here.

It is with great sadness that the Oxfordshire and District Brass Band Association announce the death of their President, Ron Sudworth, who passed away in the early hours of 11th March after a long illness bravely borne.
Ron worked tirelessly for the Association and for brass bands in the Oxford area and beyond. He was an inspiration to so many.
Following his National Service as a military musician, Ron came to Oxford and joined the Morris Motors band. He was also a member of the Harry Mortimer Men of Brass band. From the formation of the Kennington (Oxford) Band in 1973, Ron was their Musical Director and his love of banding was with him to the end.
Our sympathy goes to his widow Barbara, daughter Lynne, sons Martin and Nick and to all his family.
Funeral arrangements and obituary to follow

23 November 2009
Last night, the Oxfordshire and District Brass Band Association held its Annual General Meeting at Oxford Sea Cadets Hall. Despite a very poor turn out (no local bands sent representatives to the meeting), the AGM went ahead and the committee has been confirmed as being the same as last year, albeit with the loss of Cliff Sadler who has had to stand down due to other commitments. The Committee would like to thank Cliff for his hard work over the past year.
11 October 2009

Many congratulations to Wantage Silver ‘B’ Band who today gave an excellent performance of Bruce Fraser’s Alta Vista at the National Finals in Harrogate. The Band came a superb 4th place from an unlucky number 13 draw, beating 15 other bands from all over the country. ODBBA sends best wishes to everybody at Wantage ‘B’, and to their conductor Danny Dulforce.

14 May 2009
Last Sunday (May 10) ODBBA held its annual Brass Festival at Sandhills School. Although a slightly smaller entry was received than in recent years, a good time was had by all. Congratulations to everybody who took part, and a full list of winners can be found here. ODBBA would like to extend thanks to everyone who took part: all the competitors; the two adjudicators (Steve Pritchard-Jones and Dougall Prophet); offical ODBBA accompanist David Taylor; the team of ladies who provided refreshments; and not least Mr. Mick Philpott, site manager at Sandhills School without whom the day would not be possible.
22 March 2009
Well done to all bands from the Oxfordshire area who took part in the Regional Contest at Stevenage this weekend. In particular, ODBBA would like to extend congratulations to Hungerford Town Band who came 2nd in the 3rd section, and to Wantage Silver ‘B’ who came 2nd in the 4th section. Both bands have earned a place at the National Finals in Harrogate later in the year, and ODBBA wishes them the best of luck.

15th January 2009
The newly-elected Committee met tonight for its first meeting. Main topics of discussion were the forthcoming Brass Festival on May 10th, and other proposed events such as outdoor concerts and workshops. The Committee have several exciting events planned for 2009, so watch this space!
The Association recently held its Annual General Meeting. After several years of declining support for the Association, it is very heartening to be able to report that we now have a fully-staffed Management Committee! Tony Redshaw remains as Chairman, David Roberts becomes Secretary (and continues as Webmaster), and David Martin remains as Property Master. A warm welcome is extended to Lynne Whitley (who takes on the role of Treasurer), Nigel Hall, Nikki Jones, Cliff Sadler, Ken Membury, Martin Taylor, and John Underwood. The Committee would like to extend its grateful thanks to Ian Clamp who stood down at the AGM after many years of very hard and unstinting work in various important roles.
7th October 2007
On 7th October, ODBBA held its annual Entertainments Contest. Five bands took part in two sections. The Association would like to thank everybody involved in helping to create such a successful day; the adjudicators (Mr Alan Mossford and Mr Philip Burditt), the contest stewards, Nicola Solesbury and her team of caterers, Wheatley Primary School, the British Federation of Brass Bands (for kindly allowing use of the registration cards), Aldbrickham Music for sponsoring the day’s prizes and last – but certainly not least – all the bands who gave us all a great day of outstanding entertainment. We hope you all enjoyed your day as much as the ODBBA committee did, and we look forward to welcoming you all to our future events. As always, please feel free to contact members of the committee with any feedback you may have.
29th April 2007.
On April 29th, ODBBA held its popular Brass Festival contest for the 60th consecutive year. Over 100 entries were received which, while down slightly on last year, still gave plenty of opportunity for the talented musicians of the Oxfordshire area to show off their impressive skills. ODBBA were especially pleased to welcome entrants from outside of the Association, with entries from as far afield as Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and London. The adjudicators – the ever popular Mr. Nigel Horne and Mr. Dougall Prophet – remarked on the improvement of many players since last year. An extremely high standard of playing was the order of the day, which meant that the adjudicators had a very difficult job. It is especially heartening that such a wide age-range of players (from 8 years old to considerably more mature!!) took part, with – as always at this event – the vast majority of entrants being under 19 years old. The Association would like to thank all of the competitors who took part for making the day such a resounding success, and we very much hope to see you all again next year. Full results will be posted in the Results Archive shortly.
On November 25th, the ODBBA Massed Band took part in the Oxford Festive Parade. With 39 members from 11 local bands (including a substantial number of players from the recently-formed Oxford University Band), the Massed Band played a couple of pieces in the Castle Square which got the crowd cheering and clapping. This is the second parade the Band has taken part in this year, and the City have already booked the band for the same event next year. The Association would like to thank all the players who took part on the day, and to ODBBA President Ron Sudworth for acting as Bandmaster. Thanks are also due in particular to Association secretary Dennis Barlow for organising everyone and liaising with the City to ensure that the day went smoothly.
